The adolescent and teenage years are stormy and challenging, both to the child and parents. This is a time when kids have to cope with tremendous physical body changes, the striving to be independent and develop their own identity. Adolescents and teenagers face immense peer pressure and prefer to have a “cool image” similar to their best friends.

Some of the topics that are of interest in parenting adolescents/teenagers include:
• Puberty
• Sexuality
• Tobacco, alcohol and drug abuse
• Health and fitness
• Communicating with parents
• Safety issues
• Health and Immunizations

At Gateway Pediatrics, we recommend an annual physical for all adolescents and teenagers. This is often the only opportunity we have to meet with your growing child and address health related concerns. Your teenager is welcome to meet with us alone, if the parent is comfortable with the idea of providing an opportunity for a confidential check up. Many immunizations are required for children aged 9 years and older and can be completed during the annual physical. A sports physical is often required prior to participation in an organized sport. This is also an excellent opportunity to bring in your teenager for a check up. During the well check exam, we cover issues that are age appropriate and address any specific concerns you may have about the health of your growing child.
